The Map Pack is Where Local Revenue Lives.
If you search for your service in your city and you aren't in the top three Google Map results (the “Local Pack”), you are invisible. 90% of local searchers never scroll past those three names. This checklist is your roadmap to stealing that top spot.
Section 01
The Foundation (NAP)
- Claim & Verify: Have you officially claimed your Google Business Profile (GBP)?
- 100% NAP Consistency: Does your Name, Address, and Phone Number match exactly across Google, your website, Yelp, and Facebook? (Even “St.” vs “Street” hurts you.)
- Category Selection: Have you selected the single most accurate Primary Category? (This is the most important ranking factor in your GBP.)
- Secondary Categories: Have you added all relevant secondary categories that describe your services?
- Service Area: Have you defined your service area cities in the GBP dashboard (if you go to clients vs. they come to you)?
Section 02
Profile Optimization
- Business Description: Is your 750-character description keyword-rich, written for a human, and does it mention your city + primary service in the first sentence?
- Services Section: Have you manually added every individual service you offer with a name, description, and price (if applicable)?
- Products Section: If applicable, have you added your physical or digital products?
- Attributes: Have you enabled all relevant attributes (e.g., “Women-owned,” “Free Wi-Fi,” “Wheelchair Accessible”)?
- Hours: Are your business hours accurate and do you have special hours set for holidays?
- Q&A Section: Have you proactively added and answered your own FAQ questions in the Q&A section?
Section 03
The Visual Arsenal
- Cover Photo: Is your cover photo high-resolution, professional, and clearly represents your brand or storefront?
- Logo: Is your logo uploaded at a high resolution with no pixelation?
- Photo Volume: Do you have at least 10–25 high-quality photos of your work, team, and location uploaded?
- Geotagged Photos: Are your photos geotagged with your business location before uploading? (Use a tool like GeoImgr.)
- Video: Have you uploaded at least one 30-second video showcasing your business, work, or team?
- Ongoing Photo Cadence: Are you adding new photos at least once per week? (Freshness is a ranking signal.)
Section 04
The Review Engine
- Review Volume: Do you have more Google reviews than your top 3 local competitors?
- Review Recency: Have you received a new review within the last 30 days?
- Ask System: Do you have a documented, repeatable system (text message, email, QR code) to ask every single customer for a review?
- Response Rate: Have you responded to 100% of your reviews — both positive and negative?
- Keyword-Rich Responses: Do your responses to positive reviews naturally include your city name and primary service keyword?
Section 05
Google Posts & Engagement
- Weekly Posts: Are you publishing at least one Google Post per week (offers, updates, events)?
- Keyword Usage: Do your posts naturally include your target city and service keywords?
- Call-to-Action: Does every post include a clear CTA button (e.g., “Book Now,” “Learn More,” “Call Now”)?
- Messaging: Have you enabled and are you actively responding to the GBP messaging feature?
Section 06
Citation Building & Off-Page Signals
- Core Citation Directories: Is your business listed (with 100% consistent NAP) on Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Maps, and Facebook?
- Industry Directories: Are you listed in niche-specific directories relevant to your trade (e.g., Avvo for attorneys, Houzz for contractors, Zocdoc for medical)?
- Local Directories: Are you listed in your local Chamber of Commerce directory and other city-specific business sites?
- Citation Audit: Have you audited and cleaned up any duplicate, incorrect, or outdated listings across the web?
Section 07
Your Website as a Local Signal
- NAP on Website: Is your exact NAP (matching GBP) in the footer of every page of your website?
- Schema Markup: Does your website have LocalBusiness schema markup with your name, address, phone, hours, and geo-coordinates?
- Location Pages: If you serve multiple cities, do you have a unique, non-duplicate location/city page for each one?
- Page Speed: Does your website score above 85 on Google PageSpeed Insights for mobile?
- GBP Website Link: Does the URL listed in your GBP link to a page specifically optimized for your primary local keyword?
